Meet Surya Pratap, a resilient 14-year-old boy from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. As the eldest of four siblings, Surya's journey began with significant challenges. At just days old, he battled pneumonia, and soon after, concerns about a heart murmur led his worried parents to seek medical advice.
The initial assessments raised the possibility of congenital heart disease, prompting them to make the difficult journey to AIIMS Delhi when Surya was only a few months old.
At AIIMS, an echocardiogram revealed the diagnosis: dextrocardia, double outlet right ventricle (DORV), and a ventricular septal defect (VSD). This marked the beginning of years filled with follow-up appointments, each one accompanied by the hope of finding a suitable treatment. Despite their perseverance, options appeared limited, and the family's financial strain was palpable. Surya’s father, a labourer earning a modest 10,000 rupees per month, struggled to provide for his family while facing mounting medical expenses.
A visit to Satya Sai Hospital offered a glimmer of hope, but the complex nature of Surya's condition meant that uncertainty lingered. Faced with dwindling options and the weight of their situation, Surya's family began to feel hopeless.
However, everything changed when they learned about the Child Heart Foundation (CHF) through the UPRBSK Team. On May 17, 2024, they arrived at CHF, where a thorough assessment confirmed the urgent need for a Cath Glenn procedure, estimated at 4 lakhs. Surya's father, filled with gratitude and determination, enrolled in CHF's Hridaan program designed for financially disadvantaged families. His heartfelt wish was simple: to see his son grow up healthy and vibrant, just like any other child.
On July 17, 2024, Surya underwent the cardiac catheterization procedure at CHF, marking a significant milestone in his journey to recovery. He was discharged the following day, and since then, he and his family have attended follow-up appointments, with surgery planned soon.
Surya’s father is profoundly thankful to the entire CHF team and the generous donors whose support has made this journey possible. For the first time in years, he feels hopeful that his son will soon be fine, like other children his age.
