Summaiya’s Heart Surgery Journey

From Years of Struggle to a New Beginning

For nine-year-old Summaiya from Meerut, living with a heart condition had been part of her childhood for many years.

Her health problems began when she was just two years old. She experienced severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, and episodes of cyanosis, a bluish discoloration that can occur when the body does not receive enough oxygen.

Medical evaluation revealed that Summaiya was living with a congenital heart defect and needed specialized cardiac care.

But her family faced a heartbreaking challenge. With limited financial resources, they were unable to continue the treatment she needed.

As the years passed without appropriate cardiac intervention, Summaiya’s condition continued to worsen.

A Community Referral Brought New Hope

Summaiya’s fragile health was eventually noticed at her local Anganwadi centre.

Recognizing that she needed further medical attention, she was connected through the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) Meerut team to Child Heart Foundation (CHF).

After years of uncertainty, the referral opened a new path toward the specialized treatment Summaiya urgently needed.

Critical Evaluation and Timely Treatment

At Child Heart Foundation, Summaiya was evaluated by Dr. Kohli. Her condition required timely medical intervention, and she was advised to undergo corrective surgery for Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF).

For Summaiya’s family, arranging such specialized heart surgery would have been financially impossible on their own.

With the CSR support of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the cost of her treatment was sponsored, allowing her family to move forward with the surgery without the overwhelming financial burden.

Successful TOF Repair Surgery

On 5 January 2026, Summaiya successfully underwent Tetralogy of Fallot repair surgery at Marengo Asia Hospital.

After years of struggling with breathlessness, cyanosis, and other health challenges, the successful surgery became a life-changing milestone for Summaiya and her family.

Today, Summaiya is stable, recovered, and looking forward to a healthier future.

Summaiya’s journey highlights how important community-level identification and timely referral can be for children living with congenital heart defects.
